AISC Addresses Tariffs

By March 7, 2018Construction News

The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) has addressed the tariffs proposed by the Trump administration in a response posted on their website as well as a letter sent to the White House.

The AISC’s position is that the best way to increase utiliation of domestic steel is to increase the size of the market. Their response includes a number of considerations and explains there are many factors that determine the cost of a construction project. A downloadable pdf is available via a link in the AISC press release.

The final language of the Executive Order has not been disclosed. AISC’s letter letter to the President urges the Adminstration to consider an important modification to the Commerce report: include fabricated structural steel in the products covered by the tariffs.

The AISC points out that offshore fabricators can purchase steel at tariff-free prices then fabricate and import the components below the cost of domestic fabrication.
