Highlights
In response to Hurricane Sandy, subway entrances in New York City now have water-tight flood doors. The massive steel doors feature an inflatable gasket, similar to submarine doors. They sit in their open position until a storm approaches, when they are rolled into place and secured.
Each door is clad in custom-fitted embossed stainless panels. The panels slide vertically and clip into existing connections on the door surface. Custom panels were also made to hide the existing structural steel and the space between the flood doors. This project involved field-measuring every surface and connection point on the existing doors, the existing steel, slab and marble. From our measurements and mock-ups, we created erection plans and shop drawings for each piece of cladding.
